Connecticut Junior Women's Club - http://www.cjw.org/

Connecticut Junior Women, Inc. (CJW) is a non-profit organization dedicated to community service and to promoting common interests in education, philanthropy, public health, civic and fine arts. Founded in 1938, CJW, Inc. was originally part of the General Federation of Women's Clubs until 1978 when the Connecticut organization became independent.

CJW, Inc. is made up of 56 Junior clubs and 11 Juniorette clubs throughout the state of Connecticut. Any person, 18 years of age or older who is interested in the common goals may apply for membership in a Junior club. Several Junior clubs sponsor a Juniorette club for young women ages 9-18 years.

The various clubs are composed of about 2,000 women from all walks of life who live in 64 different Connecticut communities. From town to town, Juniors are joined by common traits - this is a group of talented women who donate their time to the betterment of their communities and the making of new friendships.

It is during our volunteer projects - from the developing a library story time to organizing a dinner dance as a fundraiser - that friendships are made, skills are sharpened and new skills are gained while personal growth is explored. Junior projects combine enjoyment and personal achievement with the progress of their communities.

Connecticut Junior Women is the governing state board which unites the local community chapters across the state. Both the local and state board is composed of a director, or president, officers and board members. There are also chapters called Juniorettes which are civic organizations for youth.  The CJW Director and Executive Board sponsors statewide projects and programs and provides resources, training and direction for the local chapters.

Each individual club is autonomous and a voting member of the CJW, Inc. Board of Directors which meets five (5) times per year to share information, project ideas, programs and common issues.

The individual clubs are organized into nine (9) Districts which provide clubs with a smaller group of club contacts for interaction with regard to meetings, programs, projects and idea sharing.

Junior Women is designed to encompass as many interests as possible. The department structure provides room for all types of projects from art auctions to visiting shut-ins.

The departments available to all clubs are:

bulletArts: performing, creative and visual
bulletConservation: beautification, environmental action and resource preservation

bulletState Project

State Project is a long-term commitment by CJW member clubs to work together toward a common goal.  The current CJW State Project is Time for Life.

Projects provide a large portion of the state's population with monetary, educational and service benefits. Some of the past CJW State Projects are:  Lupus Foundation; SIDS; Juvenile Diabetes; UCONN Children's Cancer Program; UCONN Pediatric Pulmonary Program; UCONN Craniofacial Team; Beardsley Zoo; Special Wishes; the Bridgeport Hospital Burn Unit.

Each department also has a state chairwoman who serves as a resource for help and ideas for women planning projects on a local level.

From the shore to the state line from the Capital to Fairfield County, Juniors are volunteers whose social activities and project work enriches their lives and the communities in which they live.

 TIME FOR LIFE

Established in 1999, Time For Life is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to developing and implementing programs and services to meet the needs of children with cancer and their families.

Serving communities in the Connecticut and Massachusetts areas, Time For Life works to serve children and families from the point of diagnosis, through treatment, and onto survival. This continuity of services increases the effectiveness of our programs and allows us to address the long-term issues and complications faced by all those affected by a child’s cancer.

The children we help are treated for a range of different cancer diagnoses at the major pediatric oncology hospitals in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Ranging in age from infancy to 18 years of age, some of the children we help are in treatment, some are in remission and others are fortunate enough to be considered cured.

Significant advances have been made in the treatment of pediatric cancer. Encouragingly, the cancer death rate has dropped more dramatically for children than in any other age group. However, these advances often result in lengthy and intense treatment regimes.

While Time For Life applauds this monumental progress, we also recognize the serious complications of the disease and treatments, and are well aware of the profound impact they have on the quality of life of children as well as on their loved ones. Given the range of outcomes and the need for services, Time For Life is dedicated to helping children with cancer and their families gain access to sound information and supportive programs that can help them through their enormously difficult challenges

Time For Life would like to thank the following individuals and businesses for their donations, goods & services and tireless efforts for our Summer Program. This summer we had 45 families attend our program. Without your support, this would not have been possible. Thank you for being part of what we do for children with cancer and their families.
